Authority dataset / v2026.04

The U.S. STRACNET, in one filterable database.

STRACNET is the Department of Defense Strategic Rail Corridor Network. Roughly 38,800 route-miles of freight rail jointly designated by the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command and the Federal Railroad Administration. It is the rail surface that moves armored brigades, ammunition, and fuel from installations to ports of debarkation. This page indexes the corridors, owners, port endpoints, axle and clearance specs, and federal funding eligibility, with a stable anchor URL on every row so the data is citable.

What is in the file

Each row is one corridor segment.

  • Stable identity. A slug-style corridor_id and a stable in-page anchor URL so you can deep-link any row in a brief, grant narrative, or board memo.
  • Real owners. Class I and short-line operators by name, with secondary interchange operators where the route requires more than one carrier.
  • Real endpoints. Named military installation and port of debarkation, not abstract regions.
  • Spec set. Maximum axle load, AAR plate clearance, and electrification status, the three numbers that decide whether a load can move at all.
  • Funding eligibility. CRISI and RRIF eligibility flags, the two federal programs that can pay to fix a STRACNET segment.
  • Confidence flag. Every row is tagged low, medium, or high based on how well the segment is documented in public sources. Low rows need primary-source backfill before they go in a brief.

Corridors

Filter, search, anchor-link, and cite.

Filters are inclusive within a category. Searching matches installation, port, owner, state, and operational notes. Every row exposes a stable hash anchor for citation in a brief or grant narrative.

Limits

What this database is not.

  • Not a sensitive document. Detailed STRACNET segment status, restricted bridge ratings, and outload contingency plans are handled by SDDC TEA and not republished here. Rows reflect public, citable references only.
  • Not a survey-grade asset register. Route-miles are estimates derived from public route data. Treat as planning-grade context, not engineering inputs.
  • Not exhaustive. The DOD network spans roughly 38,800 route-miles. This seed indexes the highest-traffic outload corridors plus key depots and arsenals. More rows will be added as primary sources are matched to segments.
  • Backfill in progress. Rows tagged low confidence carry an estimate flag in the notes. Future versions will replace these with citations to specific SDDC TEA, FRA, GAO, and CRISI award documents.
